Service Aims
Yin2Work was established to address the under representation of the BME Community in the Social Care Sector. Currently, only 0.8% of the Social Care workforce is from BME community (Annual Census of Social Work Staff) and so this service is aimed at reducing high unemployment levels in the refugee community. There are approximately 10,000 refugees living in Scotland with unemployment within this group estimated to be as high as 40%. (Scottish Migration Partnership Website 2009)
Service Summary
The service was launched in January 2009. It aims to provide work placements in the Social Care Sector and it is envisaged that up to 150 refugees will be identified for work placements over 3 years. Each will work towards a relevant vocational qualification (SVQ Level 2 in Health & Social Care) provided through YMCA Glasgow’s Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) Approved Centre. Placements are in YMCA Glasgow projects or in partner social care agencies. This involves ongoing assessment and support of the candidates. Mentors can be arranged for candidates who require more support. The service meets necessary travelling expenses during the trainees’ placements. Once qualified, service users will be provided with assistance in accessing employment in the social care sector. The service provides any advice and support which is required by partner social care agencies and aims to promote and raise awareness of social care services amongst the refugee community.
Eligibility
Yin2 Work aims to be as widely accessible as possible and requires no formal qualifications. The service is open to people who have been granted refugee status by the Home Office. Each participant should have completed ESOL at intermediate level or equivalent. The selection process is undertaken in accordance with YMCA Glasgow’s Recruitment and Selection Policy.
