This project offers 12 bed spaces for young single homeless adults and has remarkable results in securing tenancies for the young residents in the Hamilton area.
Accommodation and Facilities
Where?
Charles Brownlie House is situated in the Portwell area of Hamilton and within easy reach of the town centre.
What?
The main aim of Charles Brownlie House is to not only to provide safe, secure accommodation for young single homeless people, but to help them develop the necessary social and life skills to enable them to move on to their own tenancy.
Who?
The project can accommodate up to 12 young single homeless people in their own self contained flats.
There are 3 scatter flats for intermediate accommodation prior to moving to secure tenancy.
Referrals are accepted formally through South Lanarkshire Council and other agencies working with young people in the Hamilton area.
Security
The building is monitored by CCTV and YMCA Glasgow staff are on duty 24 hours a day.
Support and programme
Each supported resident is assigned a key worker from the staff. The worker will assist the young person to draw up the individual long-term accommodation plan.
Generally residents should expect to stay a minimum of three months before they are assesed for follow-on accommodation. Depending on the young person and their level of independence, they may remain in the project for up to two years.
In addition to the accommodation offered, Charles Brownlie House also provides a programme of social and educational opportunities for residents. Residents can take part in a range of activities including swimming, football, talks and discussions, residential weekends, skiing, canoeing, social evenings, etc.
There is also the opportunity to participate in YMCA programmes nationally and internationally.
Residents take part in programme activities on a voluntary basis and are actively encouraged to assist with the planning of these activities.
Additional facilities include: 24 hour support staffing, TV and video lounge, laundry room with dryer and intercom system.
