Central Branch

Branston Court

Unaccompanied minors are not supported by NASS, and are cared for by Social Services. At our supported accommodation at Branston Court, we provide accommodation for young unaccompanied refugees, until they turn 18 or get a decision on their asylum claim.

Craigbank Family Centre

Support, advice and information is available for refugees living in the area, with English, computer and fitness classes run regularly.

Volunteers

Y Work with Refugees is looking for volunteers to work in the Community Space at Central Branch. This space provides drop-in facilities and a range of structured educational and recreational programmes for our asylum seeker residents. It plays an important role in fostering a sense of community among our residents and provides a welcoming, relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. The area is divided into 4 sections: an interenet cafe with four computers; a classroom; a games room, which is also used for craft activities and as a creche space; and a coffee and snack bar where residents can sit and relax with one another. The community space is for residents and we strive to continually develop the area and the facilities/programmes we provide through consultation with them.

We have a wide range of volunteering opportunities and are currently recruiting:

  • Drop-in volunteers - duties include serving tea/coffee and selling snacks, supervising the use of the space and chatting with residents.
  • Internet Cafe volunteers - duties include supervising the use of the computers and assisting residents to use them, possible by offering one-to-one or small group teaching on specific areas.
  • ESOL volunteers - depending on preference, volunteers could either assist residents with their English in large groups in the classroom or on a one-to-one/small group basis.

We are also happy to receive enquiries from anyone who would like to volunteer with asylum seekers and refugees and who has a specific skill they feel could benefit our residents. Possible areas may include art activities, sports, work with children.
