The YMCA Glasgow Wind Orchestra is a community wind orchestra, which was founded in 1982. The membership consists of over 50 playing members, coming from a wide range and varied musical backgrounds. The orchestra exists as part of the YMCA movement, receiving funding and support from YMCA Glasgow.
Rehearsals currently take place within the City of Glasgow, and the band is a standard wind orchestra.
Members pay an annual subscription, which allows us to develop by investing in music and instruments.
Although the orchestra is already a fairly large ensemble, vacncies arise frequently for new members - particularly in the Brass and Percussion sections.
Players of suitable ability and experience are welcome to join us, although we reserve the right to audition if necessary.
The range of music, which the orchestra undertakes, is extremely varied in style. Concert audiences often comment that they appreciate the variety of music played, and recent concerts have included some of the following:- - Marches
- Classical Style
- Stage/Screen/Shows
- Jazz/Swing Style
- Popular/Light
The orchestra is well known for touring, and has travelled quite considerably during it's short history. Destinations have included the Netherlands, Italy, Denmark, USA and Germany.
The orchestra undertakes a number of engagements each year in a wide variety of venues. This often takes the form of fundraising concerts and municipal functions. A standard flat-fee is charged (details on request). All the hosts need to provide is approximately 40 chairs for the orchestra members, light refreshments, and of course an audience! Musical programmes can be tailored to suit the audience or the occasion.
